TAU PARTICIPATES IN IYBSSD

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Francisca Oladipo with some of the Academic Staff of Thomas Adewumi University were virtually present at the International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development (IYBSSD) held on Thursday, 25th August 2022. The President of the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAF), Prof. Jonathan Jansen speaking on the effects of COVID-19 on Academic research, he is of the view that due to the pandemic, humanity has developed a sense of humility.  He further delivered a presentation on ” Interdisciplinary between Basic Sciences and the Social Sciences and Humanities in promoting The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He opined that one branch of Science can’t achieve the SDGs, therefore all Science disciplines must work together as a team to achieve the goals.

Dr. Sudesh Sivarasu, the Co-chair of South Africa Young Academy of Science ( SAYAS), delivered a presentation on ” Using Basic Sciences to accelerate innovation” He revealed that due to many reasons some of the proposed innovation fails, and some of the reasons include but not limited to : Lack of preparation , lack of ecosystem , short term mindset and lack of appropriate technology especially in healthcare. However, he further identified certain key learnings toward sustainable innovation : Agility to adopt innovation quickly, Collaboration with transdisciplinary research teams and Ability to reuse and repurpose failed innovations

The last presentation was delivered by Dr. Nnditshedzeni Eric Maluta, the head of the Department and Coordinator of Vuwana Science Resource Centre, University of Venda. While Dr. Aldo Stobel gve the closing comments after the question and answer session .

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof.Francisca Oladipo urged the lecturers who attended the conference to not put restrictions on the coverage of their academic papers but allow inputs from other aspects of Sciences such as Social Sciences in the discourse of their papers.
